Sailing Club becomes a Charity

Our application to become a Charitable Incorporated Organisation has now been approved by the Charity Commission

Our Charitable objects are

1. To promote community participation in healthy recreation by providing facilities and equipment for water sports, including but not limited to sailing, paddle boarding, kayaking, and canoeing, and organising a programme of water sports activities.
2. The promotion of the maritime heritage of Arnside village for the public benefit by the preservation, repair, and maintenance of historic buildings and craft in Arnside.
3. To provide or assist in the provision of facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation or other leisure time occupation of individuals who have need of such facilities by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disability, financial hardship or social circumstances with the object of improving their conditions of life.

Advantages of being a charity include –

1) The Club does not need to pay tax on trading income from non-members going on training courses for example paddleboard courses
2) Donations to the Club are eligible for 25% tax relief
3) People can leave money to the club tax free. You can leave up to 10% of the estate to charities tax free.
4) Grant funding should be easier to obtain.
5) The Club is now incorporated (or limited) meaning the members do not have any liability for debts of the club.

We have set up a trading subsidiary “Old Customs House Arnside Ltd” to deal with bar income and music night ticket sales. The trading subsidiary will donate any profits to the charity tax free.
